The Common Cold
Colds are caused by any one of 200 or more viruses, making it almost impossible to cure. That means you just have to wait until it goes away, which can be 7 to 14 days. Colds come on gradually and spread easily, usually through hand contact or from sneezing and coughing. Symptoms
Runny Nose, Sneezing, Stuffiness, Red Eyes, Sore Throat, Dry Cough, Headache, Muscle Aches, Mild Fever (occasionally).
Treatment
There is no cure, but you can take an over-the-counter product to treat the symptoms. Remember, antibiotics are ineffective against viruses, so they won't help your cold.
The Flu
While a cold comes on gradually, the flu hits you fast. You can go from feeling fine to being in bed with a fever in just a few hours. Symptoms can last 4 to 7 days, but fatigue and weakness can last 2 to 3 weeks.
Symptoms
Moderate to High Fever lasts 3 to 4 days, Loss of Appetite, Severe Muscle Aches, Chills, Severe Headache, Possible Sore Throat, Fatigue and Exhaustion, Severe Dry Cough.
Treatment
Stay home, get as much rest as possible and drink liquids to prevent dehydration. Take an over-the-counter product to treat the symptoms. Call your doctor if symptoms persist beyond a week or if your temperature is above 102°F.
